Nobody jumps for joy about getting a tooth pulled. But at Family Dental Care, Dr. Gaurang Bhatt and the team have the option of using IV sedation for tooth extractions to make it way less stressful. Let’s dive in and answer the top questions about how this type of sedation can help.
Think of IV sedation as being awake but totally out of it. It goes way deeper than just nitrous oxide or a pill you take before you come in. Dr. Bhatt and the team use this to help you relax while they work. They put a small line in your arm to push meds along with local anesthesia. You’re awake enough to follow directions, but you won’t care what’s happening. Most folks don’t remember a thing. It works fast, too.
Our team usually suggests this option for people who have a hard time getting numb or experience any of these situations:
You might’ve put off fixing your teeth cause you were too nervous about the procedure. IV sedation changes that cause it puts you in a headspace where you don’t feel the stress. Since Dr. Bhatt and the team combine this with local numbing shots, you get a painless tooth extraction.Â

Once you’re in the chair, the team hooks you up to a monitor. They put the IV line in and start the meds. You’ll feel heavy and sleepy almost instantly. Then we do the local anesthesia to numb the spot. You won’t feel sharp pain. You might feel a little pressure, but that’s it. The team monitors your vitals the entire time to ensure your safety while they work on your teeth.
We will instruct you not to eat or drink anything for approximately six to eight hours before your appointment. Someone needs to drive you to the office and take you home afterward because you’ll be way too groggy to drive. Wear loose clothes so they can get to your arm easily.Â
Dr. Bhatt and his team watch your heart rate and oxygen levels while you’re in the chair, so risks are minimal. You’ll probably feel groggy for a few hours. Some patients may experience a slight queasiness afterward. The nausea usually passes quickly.Â
